A major part of the government's Platform For Change document was an orbital metro line that would run from near the airport around to the southwestern suburbs of the city, before turning back northeast to rejoin the rest of the planned rail network near the city centre. The line would take in all of Dublin's western suburbs as well as many important inner suburbs. In the Transport 21 plan, the section from the airport to Tallaght was slated for construction with a completion date of 2014. It would be built in several phases, with a phase opening each year from 2010-2014. The fate of the second phase, from Tallaght to the city centre, was unclear. It is now more likely that Metro West will be built in one go, with a completion date of 2019. Update 21/04/2021: There is no longer any plan to build this line. | ||||
