A public transport blackspot, the town of Lucan in west Dublin has seen enormous low density housing development over the last few decades. Sadly, a reservation for a railway has not been provided. Nonetheless, since 1999's A Platform For Change report, it has been proposed to build a light railway from the city centre out to this area.

The line, formerly known as Line F but as Lucan Luas since the 2010s, would start somewhere in the city centre. The latest alignment is looking like this will be at Stephen's Green West. It would then run west to the Luas Red Line at Fatima and follow that line to Blackhorse where it would split off to the west. From here it would head north into Ballyfermot, crossing the Kildare Railway Line at Kylemore. Then the trams would continue west over the M50 and past the Liffey Valley area.

Afterwards, the route follows a circuitous path towards its destination of Adamstown train station. It threads its way through housing estates in a manner similar to the existing bus services. It is likely that progress through here will be slow.

Although the line has not yet been assigned a colour, it appeared as a purple line in an old visualisation, and teal in a more recent one.

Update 01/09/2024: There has been no update on the Lucan Luas in some time. The TII page on the scheme is very out of date and the link to the map is wrong. In this screengrab on Reddit of the route, which is probably not finalised, can be seen to run from Adamstown train station (soon to be converted to DART) through Lucan and towards Blackhorse on the Luas Red Line. It then follows that line until Fatima where it heads east terminating at Stephen's Green. The line is mentioned on page 12 of this PDF from Transport Infrastructure Ireland from 2019 where it is listed as part of a 2035 network. It is looking like it will have to wait until construction is well under way on the current huge round of projects such as DART+ and Metrolink so that planning resources can be freed up.
